Record Numbers Take Part in Bronze Duke of Edinburgh at CEC
Cowes Enterprise College is celebrating a record 62 students enrolled on this year’s Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, the highest number in the academy’s history. What makes this cohort particularly remarkable is their exceptional commitment to the volunteering element of the programme, with most students contributing at least an hour each week to support the local community.
Students have taken on a wide range of volunteering roles, from coaching, teaching and leadership within the Scout Association, Girlguiding UK, local dance schools, and sports teams, to supporting after-school provision in local primary schools. Others are giving their time at community hubs, including Park Road Community Café, Northwood House, and Gurnard Community Garden, where pupils have led activities, supported events, and contributed to local projects.
Several students are volunteering with charities, working with animals, or undertaking independent community projects such as organising regular litter picks. Feedback from partners across Cowes and the surrounding area has been overwhelmingly positive, recognising the meaningful difference CEC students are making.
Rachel Kitley, Principal, said: “We are incredibly proud of our students’ dedication to their Duke of Edinburgh volunteering. Their commitment, maturity and community spirit shine through in every placement. Not only are they working hard towards their Award, but they are also making a tangible difference to the lives of others, a true reflection of the values we hold as a school.”
The academy’s DofE team added that they are delighted by both the students’ hard work and the impact their volunteering continues to have across the community.
